I did that after I rebooted using Colin's suggestion. After the
reboot, xfce4-screensaver came back up, so I uninstalled it (purged
it). Now it's gone, hopefully for good.

Which is odd because I installed it with apt...
$ apt-cache pkgnames | $grep $COLOR xscreensaver 2> /dev/null
xscreensaver-gl
xscreensaver-data
xscreensaver-screensaver-bsod
xscreensaver-data-extra
xscreensaver-screensaver-dizzy
libopengl-xscreensaver-perl
xscreensaver
xscreensaver-screensaver-webcollage
xscreensaver-gl-extra
That said, it's up, no errors (I installed xfonts-75dpi and
xfonts-100dpi and renamed "dina" to "helvetica" in ~/.Xdefaults as per
Colin's reference, then rebooted).
At least it all works now. Thanks again.
