To the password prompt or the user selection screen?

I imagine what is happening is that you are logging in but then X (or
something) is crashing and logging you out again. It could be a
graphics drive issue I think.

Log in remotely and watch syslog
tail -f /var/log/syslog

Then try and login locally and see what appears in syslog.

No, not as far as I know.  In fact I suspect it is not possible.
