Updating 14.04.03

I have a really old system that now I wish to update.
When I do "apt update" I get errors

W: Failed to fetch
http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/trusty-backports/multiverse/binary-i386/Packages
 Connection failed

This is because the Packages file is now a gz file and not just Packages.

But how do I fix that so it can update ?
