Problems starting after installation.

Hello.
I have recently had my Dell Latitude 5511 returned to me from Dell when an
issue I had with the computer appeared to require replacement of some
hardware.
Windows had been installed by Dell, yet I wanted my computer to have Ubuntu
20.04, so I installed Ubuntu from a USB overwriting the installed Windows.
The installation appeared successful: there was one complaint early on when
checking the installation that one file had errors and there may be errors
later.
I restarted the computer when prompted to restart it by the installation
process, removed the installation medium (the USB stick) when prompted to
do this, pressed return. Ubuntu successfully started. I completed the
post-installation process by not setting up any cloud services, allowing
anonymous usage information to be sent, and not permitting location
information.
I then restarted the computer and a short while after the Dell splash
screen was displayed accompanied with a small Ubuntu circular insignia
below, the screen went blank and I was left with nothing more than a
flashing cursor in the top left of screen.
I have repeated this process four times.
What could be going wrong? Might this problem have anything to do with the
concerns reported at the start of the installation?
Owen.
