upgrade dependency error [SOLVED ]

There's a useful guide here:
https://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/2416 that I used,
including the part about the timeshift backup. That allowed me to
revert to the last working version very easily and I now have Mint
18.3 working nicely. Thanks for all the advice. Oliver thanks for the
caution about Mint's idiosyncracy.
