Going off the original topic here, but, as you mentioned server
images.....

I have only ever used the conventional server images because I've only
ever used normal PC type hardware. Last year I upgraded my home server
from the old 32 bit board that had been running almost a year since the
last reboot :-) to a new 64 bit board. Now using the Jetway NF9W-2930
industrial motherboard.

I used the original ubuntu-20.04-live-server-amd64.iso image to make a
bootable USB thumb drive. That comes up with two top options, what I
will call the ordinary installer first, second something that was called
something like a safe graphics installer. With my Samsung SyncMaster
204T plugged in via a DVI-VGA adaptor (so that I can use the source
button on the monitor to swap between DVI and VGA screens to see my own
installation notes as I go) and a USB keyboard, only the safe graphics
one worked i.e. produced the usual installation instructions/guidance on
my monitor. First time I installed everything I thought I would be able
to do updates and install "extras" such as the ssh server from the USB
keyboard but no, after install I had no graphics output at all so I had
to go over it all again and tick the box to install the ssh stuff, but
that's all fine, it's been sitting there working away for over a year
now with no problems.

A couple of weeks ago I got my spare, identical Jetway board out to do
another server install for experimenting with the motion security camera
software so I thought I might as well use the latest server image
ubuntu-20.04.2-live-server-amd64.iso. I can't use it because the safe
graphics option is no longer there. However the older image now, I
believe, pulls up a much improved procedure that specifically says
something like "install ssh to connect after reboot" or words to that
effect as I recall and has, again as I recall, a much improved network
interface setup.

I've not tried using the new image with the monitor's DVI input because
that's always plugged into my desktop computer. Maybe I will one day
with a spare monitor, just out of curiosity but for now I have other
things to do like figuring out how to safely and cheaply get onto a
strip of roof to install that camera on the outside wall....

What point am I making with this post? Always get the initial installer
when it's released and keep it safely backed up. I've just been doing a
little digging and it's not obvious how to obtain it today.

Regards to all,

Dave
