I bit the bullet and did as suggested in the how-to page:

$ sudo fwupdmgr refresh
$ sudo fwupdmgr update

It ran pretty smoothly and after the reboot that is necessary to complete the
update I got this after logging on:

$ fwupdmgr get-upgrades
Devices with no available firmware updates:
 • System Firmware
 • UEFI dbx
Devices with the latest available firmware version:
 • SAMSUNG MZALQ512HALU-000L1
 • Unifying Receiver

So it looks like it was a safe update. :)
