This is the behavior I have always seen and, unlike Liam, I like it.
I use Xubuntu 20.04.3 and I have never seen this cross-desktop alt-tab
switching.
I have noticed that if I have a file open in LibreOffice Writer on one
desktop and I try to open the same file on another desktop, the panel
flashes the LOW item at me, and if I select that panel item, I get
thrown to the correct desktop where the file is already open. I don't
mind it.
I agree with the OP - while the whole computer is mine to play with, I
organize the desktops for specific purposes and prefer to keep them
isolated in that way.
It kind of bugs me that, when I'm in a Zoom meeting and someone posts
a URL in the chat and I click on it, my browser gets yanked onto the
desktop I'm using for zoom. It took me a while to get used to this.
I have keyboard shortcuts set up to switch desktops or switch windows'
desktops with ease, so it's simple enough to get around these
distractions.
It's all a matter of preference and making things easy using all the
settings available. This is one of the many reasons I've stuck with
Xubuntu for the last 9 years (since Unity came out in Ubuntu and
discarded many of the GNOME 2 tweaks) and I'll stick with it as long
as I can and all the many config settings are accessible.
Just MNSHO.
