Hi All

I'm guessing that I have just managed to make a nice door stop, before I strip
her for parts thought I'd ask you guys

After having a few problem with getting an old(ish) Acer Aspire to boot from
USB, Bios was set fine but would never actually boot from one, it would "try"
but always failed with "No Boot Device Found" which left me having to get thru
many F12 options in turn to get there each time

So I thought maybe a BIOS update may help, I went to the Acer site, supplied
the service tag, downloaded the next BIOS version tool which comes as Windows &
Dos tools

As this box had only 18.04 nothing else I thought the Dos option was the way to
go (FreeDos on USB) it went OK I backed up the old Bios "just in case" and then
tried the update, only to see the "Insufficient memory" prompt

So I went with a Win7 Live USB, which was working fine writing the BIOS
(AFAICS) until Win7 crashed, left it for as long as I could but in the end I
had to accept that it needed to be restarted

So now no lights, no POST sounds, nothing on monitor

Removed CMOS battery left overnight, replaced the next morning, at which point
I noticed that the fans were starting when the box was powered, but would not
stop when power button was pressed for the power down time (well much longer
really)

searching the net brings many odd ideas (as always) none of which seemed
helpful

does anyone have a hailmary ???
