How to open documents on top with 21.04?

Hi folks,

Say I want to edit a text document.  I used to double click on it, the 
text editor would come up and and I'd start editing.  Now I've either 
inadvertently changed a setting somewhere, or an update has changed 
something, as all that happens is a get a window telling me that the 
document is ready and I have to click on the side window.

This is really bloody annoying for someone on the autistic spectrum like 
myself.  How do I fix this?
