Hi Colin,
More observations from today:-
Using a SanDisk Cruzer Blade (called HERMES) USB flash drive.
If the drive does not automount (is that the right word?), start Nautilus
(file manager) and click on HERMES to mount the flash drive.
Sods law - when I tried it today, the first time, it worked.

As you can see, in the second log entry, there is no message about mounting
the USB flash drive.
