Hello, Ian.
I do not know python.
But, in looking at that source code (on my 20.10 installation), the
program seems to me, to be checking for release upgrades of the
operating system, rather than progressing through the sources.list files
and directory, seeking updates to, and, upgrading, packages.
As I said, I do not know python, but, that is the impression that I get,
from the code that I viewed.
119 lines of code, is only a few screens, and, is worth viewing, as
opposed to (I believe that, from memory, the original UNIX kernel was)
32K lines of code (of which, from memory, we were told that only about
850 lines was in assembler, and, the rest was in "C").
