As a follow up, the kernel fault seems to be in nvkm which is the DRM 
part of the kernel driver.

Additionally the last function in X server is:
miPaintWindow

which calls into
DamageRegionAppen (in the XDamage extension)

Which calls into nouveau dri, which calls into glamor, which calls into 
dri nouveau, which calls into drm_nouveau, which asserts.

Since there is a 1 minute delay, likely the kernel graphics driver 
failed, there was a recovery (linux unloaded and reloaded the kernel 
part of the driver), then the userspace part of the graphics driver 
asserted and crashed the X server (the driver recovery failed or messed 
up the system).
