I was going to say the same.
1 router is not a mesh. It's a bog-standard normal WLAN AP.
2 routers is not a mesh. It's an AP + a repeater.
3 is a minimal mesh but with almost no redundant paths and will not
give much better results than one. It's a flip-flop: there are 2
possible paths for the signal.
4 has some chance of working better than fewer.
5+ is a true mesh, where the signal can take various paths and be
rerouted on the fly for roaming access, where clients can hop from one
AP to another and remain connected.
