Huh, I hadn't heard the term "CMR" before, and I had no idea SMR
existed. SMR is interesting tech, hopefully now dead. Learn something

For RAID, where (generally) safety of the data is paramount, I'm a
great believer in staying well behind the leading edge. So I'm HDD and
ext4 all the way. It's easier to replace bits, it's generally cheaper,
it's easier to understand and to fix, and it's almost always fast
enough. SSD in RAIDs - maybe as cache. Otherwise nope, nope, nope.
