Some apps will not load in VNC, why?

Thanks,
I tried it but got this response:
$ mate-polkit
** (polkit-mate-authentication-agent-1:6211): polkit-mate-1-WARNING **:
23:46:50.514: Unable to determine the session we are in: No session for pid 6211

What is the "session" it is talking about?
I am doing this in the VNC screen :1 from my Windows PC if that matters.

I reconnected the monitor to my system and restarted it so I could get on to the
hardware screen.
Then I ran the same command from a terminal in the GUI.
The result was this:

$ mate-polkit
** (polkit-mate-authentication-agent-1:2246): WARNING **: 23:53:25.640: Unable
to register authentication agent:
GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1.Error.Failed: An authentication agent
already exists for the given subject
Cannot register authentication agent:
GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1.Error.Failed: An authentication agent
already exists for the given subject

But unlike on VNC I was able to run GParted to have a look at the disk (all
partitions were locked of course so I could not do anything with them as
expected)...

But when GParted was started it popped up a big login dialog where I had to
enter my sudo password, and this did not happen on the VNC screen before.

GParted is a test case only, I have to boot to the GParted Live I have on my
Ventoy USB stick to really fix the partitioning on the main drive.

I did so and reduced the disk space used by Mate from 100% to 25% so there is
space for other parallel operating systems. I also created a separate partition
for home, will be activated later.
