Nice summary.
Backups while running are difficult.
I am a fan of raid mirroring if a system is to be backed up.
It can be SLOW.
i.e. disk mirroring (RAID 1)
Another strategy is rsync using sub directories.
The use of rsync allows refreshing and checking for changes.
Database systems are special and the database needs to have a backup tool set as
data lives on a giant file or a raw device.
My advice is to experiment. All these tools and strategies can be
explored with a handful of inexpensive USB memory sticks. A powered
USB hub allows
extra devices for a power or port starved machine. A powered USB hub allows old
Raspberry Pi experiments with a lot of devices.
Most of us have an old laptop that allows fun and games with a
USB hub full of USB storage devices is inexpensive.
I am sure there are better and more current references but this link reads well.
Remove the []'s. Scan down to RAID-1
