An operating system with all the usual tools, but without news and ads

Give Falkon a shot. Just "sudo apt install falkon" in a terminal, type
your password, press "Y" when asked to confirm, and boom. I've never
seen any ads in there, and it even blocks ads in other websites by
default, which is good for security and sanity.
