No, because the backup device is not mounted except when actually
backing up (at a time I'm unlikely to be using the computer). Plus I
never run rm -rf! :) And certainly not as root.

Not likely. A PSU fault is more likely to stop the machine and leave
the disks pretty much intact. Particularly if they're not being used.

It's all about real-world risk assessment, not theoretical
possibilities.
