I've been using Filezilla for many years for updating my web sites since 
moving to a cheapass hosting tier which doesn't support sftp.

FTP was always a pain in the butt, to be honest, and has long outlived 
its usefulness. The only real advantage was mget/mput in the days before 
sftp/scp became widespread.
