Problem two fold,
first I had spent ages trying to work out why/how the pastword had changed? I
reset it (AFAIK) from the recovery consol, duel boot 18.04 and a 21.10 live
USB, so had given up for a while, until wiser heads gave me a direction (before
doing something I could not recover)
Second (and more anoying) the monitor (Samsung SM245B) that is on that box has
developed a problem with the cold, it wont start, so I was on another PC that
has an SVGA out so can run on an older smaller Dell monitor

If you can give a cmd that will give me these I can use next time, It's an
nVidia card using the 340 driver before and after (AFAICT) with patch
xorg-modulepath-fix
that was disabled/removed by update but reapplied after to get a GUI back

I don't think that I get a choice, no sign of the "cog wheel" in the logon box
I'm glad it is working again (at least when the mercury is higher :->) I've
learned a lot while trying, but have more unanswered questions now i.e.
Why / How
filefix finds "no suitable file system"
there is no sign of gnome-session-manager (sudo apt-cache policy
gnome-session-m*) not installed nor a candidate
that one (and advice to install all gnome "stuff") sent me down a deadend
trying to find it, untill I checked working 18.04 & 20.04 lappies and not there
either
