I wa wrong about the password, I saw the text above the password in the box,
the same place "invalid password" is usually returned, text been the same
length and no sign of actual loging on I made an incorrect assumption (that
text is very very small)

As the monitor has DVI & SVGA inputs I had tried both (Ubuntu box DVI, Windowz
SVGA) no sign of life on monitor, I also took it apart, as it's rather compact
it was not possible to check any point voltages, as it needed to be dismantled
before the main board was accessible, I did do the best I could looking for any
dry joints in and around the power switch/unit

After this it did work, until power saving started (happens on both Windows and
Ubuntu) if I was close I could move a mouse or tap a key, but if the gap was
longer it was 50/50 if it would restart, so my work around is, start windows on
cold mornings on small Dell monitor, put larger monitor in sunny window untill
it warms up, then when it comes to life I can use either/both boxies

Yes a different computer, on same local network

It was a sugestion from another here, in response to

.xsession-errors

that ends

Failed to get properties: Unit name gnome-session-manager at .service is neither a
valid invocation ID nor unit name.

so a system relabel was needed
