mouse pointer "missing" on login screen

I installed the server edition of 22.04 and subsequently
added desktop environments.  The display manager is gdm.

On the login and password entry screens I'm missing the
icon for the mouse pointer.  Instead I have a semi-opaque
white square.  Functional, but not very accurate.

I don't know if I've missed a package or some config setting.
