creation of ext4 filesystem takes 20+ hours???

There is a mkfs flag.
   -c. Check the device for bad blocks before building the file system.
If the drive has errors of anytype things get quite slow.

I would get a terminal  window and check processes for options.
Also check for hardware logged errors.
Debugging cannot be done after reset or power cycle.

Thermal... T430 might be dusty and run warm to hot.  Blow out any duct
and fuzz.   My T420 and T470 run nicely.
