this exists aready and is called UbuntuCore ... with the next LTS there
will be a snap-only desktop install ... but that does not mean snaps
will go away from regular deb based installs, the demand for them in
commercial and enterprise setups is way to big for this and customers
simply love the extra security and control they get over the software
through the snap concept (rollback, test channels, as many parallel
installs of the same snap on the same machine as you like, built in
backups, release control, full gpg signed read-only (tinker proof)
packages, and secure runtime confinement, just to name a few featues
here).
as long as snaps are such a big commercial success you won't see them
go away, i'd rather expect the other direction where we end up having
just the base desktop as deb based install and more default shipped
apps becoming snaps over time.
