Yes, that's what I do. It does create a more "legitimate" looking
alias, because you can set all the other stuff as well, like
Organization. However, it is "heavier" because you need to create an
actual account. Luckily all the accounts you can create can use the
same SMTP server if the authentication is good.
Not sure your theory about SPF is correct. It definitely does check the
sending domain, not the domain of the sending server. SPF says "for
this domain, these servers are allowed to send emails". However, if you
have neutral validation ("~" instead of "-") then it will let anything
through, I think. It may score it higher for spam though. Google just
wants an SPF record, it may not (yet) do anything more.
