Been there, got the scars, my huge bite in the rear started as a simple (or so 
I thought) removal of libreoffice from an older fresh install (back when you 
had no choice with DE installs) I blindly hit "Y" to the list of files apt 
wanted to remove, only to end up with a system totally devoid of desktop and 
not bootable
