YES!
MS decided to make the PST file a database of sorts, which is almost impossible
to read from unless one uses Outlook....
The files are in two falvours, one is a complete container for everything like
settings, server connect info and incoming and outgoing messages etc.
The other simpler one is just a store of messages, but still in unreadable
format...

My mail servers are:
- A Swedish ISP where I originally got my mail connectivity back in the 1990:es
They had limited storage space for users so one had to download the messages and
store locally in order to keep them.
- GMail
Have used that since I was invited thanks to my daughter who went to Stanford at
the time Google was created and know the people working there back then.
My mail store at Google is intact there but I have still downloaded all since I
want to keep my stuff by myself.
- A private company using MS Exchenge server on the local LAN.
I also here downloaded the messages and purged them from the server using POP3
commands so I would have control over them myself. A few years back the company
mail handling was transferred to Google as a company service and at that time my
partner lost all his history (!) because he had been using it like so many do
and not kept tab on the messages himself locally...
So only in the GMail data are external.
And the messages are all inaccessible inside the PST files except by using
Outlook.
This is what I want to fix.
