I have 2 X220s, 2 T420s and a W520.

One X220, an i7, has 16GB and works fine.
One T420, also an i7, has 16GB and it works but it's a little flakey
and I'm worried mismatched SODIMMs are to blame.

The W520 has 16GB as 4x4GB, 2 matched pairs, and it's also fine, even
under load (e.g. a big VM and a bunch of Electron apps open).

Yes it works. You do want a matched pair of SO-DIMMs though, as fast
as you can afford.

You do not need to buy new.

I got mine from CEX, www.webuy.com -- this is a good cheap source but
if you have the option, travel in person to a nearby branch and pick
out a matched pair by hand if you can. You can't stipulate a matched
pair by mail order and that's bitten me.
