It is possible to install Ubuntu on *selected* ARM SBCs, but the SBC maker
needs to provide the suitably setup and configured Ubuntu image for that
board. If the maker does not have an "Ubuntu" image (or installer) for their
board, you are not going to just randomly install a "stock" Ubuntu.
Note: all of the generic user-mode code will work from the standard repos
(including base Debian repos).
The kernel and boot "magic" needs to be customized for the SBC processor and
"chipset" (on-chip / on-board I/O). Many ARM SBCs use uBoot (not all -- RPis
don't) and generally use a device tree overlay. You generally need a "custom
built" kernel and/or the proper device tree overlay(ies). And uBoot itself,
installed on the boot/install media. uBoot is compariable to grub, but the ARM
boot ROMs are not as standardized as x86 "PC" BIOS/UEFI ROMs, so there is not
anything like a standard "install on anything" or "boot on anything" image --
each ARM SBC "family" has its own boot/install media eg RPi images work on
Raspberry Pis, Orange Pi images work on Orange Pis, Banana Pi images work on
Banana Pis, etc. *Some* are consistent across models (RPi, beagleboards), but
others use separate images for each model (there are separate images for each
model and an image for one won't work on another model in the same "family"
[make]).
