Thanks Ralf, you're no doubt correct. The laptop has been running the 
whole day without a problem. The next day it might fail 5 times for no 
obvious reason. It's not my laptop, I just installed Xubuntu to help out 
a relative and I'm starting to wish that I hadn't.
