note that linux mint uses a completely own installer, not even remtely
related to ubuntu and applying completly different defaults, handling
the bootoader in completely different ways etc etc, your above
assumption is not true, please make sure to only use the ubuntu
installer when asking here on the list.

nobody on this list can really tell what mint does during install or
how it handles grub, partitioning and distro defaults in its own custom
installer backend ...

while mint uses binary packages from the ubuntu archive, it also uses
overlays for hacked up packages (IIRC that includes grub) it replaces
and its own installer, which really makes it unsupportable here ... 

unless someone here wants to commit deep dive into mints installer code
to help you, you should make sure to please ask mint installer related
questions in their forum ...
