The VM won't have the embedded key. My KVM/QEMU VM doesn't have the
pseudofile at all. But the host may, and if it does you can apply the
key using the normal activation procedure for Windows which I have
forgotten, but as I recall it was not difficult.
They key does not have to be embedded in firmware to be used. It's just
put there in many (not all) new systems as part of the stranglehold
Microsoft is trying to establish over all PC hardware sold. It allows
them to distribute - via "partners" - keys for use with uninitialised
computers, and take the keys out of the hands of users. You can still
apply any valid key manually in Windows.
I've no idea whether it is possible to REMOVE the key from the firmware
location, or to write a new key in its place.
