Very true, and excellent advice. But this is a freshly-wiped and 
re-installed system from scratch, so there is no data on it at all, just 
the OS and applications. It's never been used since installation.

Sure, someone could take out the disk and do a low-level retrieval of 
the magnetic pattern on the unused bits of disk, in which case I wish 
them well. All they'll find there is bits from my thesis :-)
