I thought that, or the other way round (historically)

If it didn't get cleared I will next time I fire her up, it has made me more
carful of using after "full-uprade -y" without looking at "--upgradable"
the mate stuff took over, I had an (albeit crippled) mate desktop that was just
a little more use than the bare wallpaper if my unity desktop, Ctrl+Alt+T did
nothing, Ctrl+Alt+F2 did give a terminal, I tried all the (old chestnut) cures
for missing dock/launcher and panel, none got me back to a working system
checking all the unity desktop files showed all up to date
I hoped that wisdom of the group would offer a way out...
in the end I concluded that I may need to wipe and start a fresh, so a radical
approach was worth a try, I did a
sudo apt remove --purge *mate*
sudo apt remove --purge plymou*
rebooted no real change still had a awful apple green (mate) blank screen
then tried
sudo apt reinstall ubuntu-unity-desktop
failed a few times due to reduced network, reboot into recovery, add network
support and try again
after a long download I had unity back, a few reboots, now only one on the
logon screen, later upgrades have been small and correct AFAICT
I'll add that to my (growing) list of "cures" most never worked though
I'm sure I will see the symtoms again even if not caused by the same thing
I cant have been the only one who ran that upgrade and got mate added? maybe
they are still trying to get back up and running

are they in media\user\drive or mnt\drive?

I did that once I got back a useable system, and it did show in both places
