What I'm unsure of is whether, during the operating system
installation, you opted in to let Ubuntu and NVIDIA manage your
driver, like I did, or if you manually installed it. If you didn't
opt in, then the Ubuntu documentation below may be useful for you.
I was hesitant to try any of the recommendations in that Ubuntu
documentation because I didn't want to interfere with whatever it is
that Ubuntu and NVIDIA do on my system, but if you're not constrained
in the same way, you might want to give some of what it suggests a
whirl.
If you start at the "NvidiaDriversInstallation" page in the wiki,
you'll see that it's deprecated:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NvidiaDriversInstallation
It suggests the "How to manage NVIDIA drivers" page, but if you
go there, you'll see that it's outdated:
https://ubuntu.com/server/docs/nvidia-drivers-installation
It suggests the "NVIDIA drivers installation" page, which is what you
want:
https://documentation.ubuntu.com/server/how-to/graphics/install-nvidia-drivers/
Even though it's server documentation, it applies to server and
non-server installations. There's information on how to install,
uninstall, and manage NVIDIA drivers.

Yeah, that happens sometimes and can usually be instantly recovered
from with the steps I had originally posted. Something else must have
gone wrong in your case.

I wouldn't either. At this point, the only experimentation I would be
doing is either in a VM or on the machine that's not currently
working right or both, depending on the experiment.
