I'm starting to suspect that these types of glitches are due to the
packages being installed in the "wrong" order and not finding
packages or files that they depend on as a result, which then causes
them to be misconfigured.
My reason for thinking this is that I sometimes can't boot because my
NVIDIA driver gets installed after a new kernel gets installed instead
of before it. When I asked whether the updater could be configured to
recognize situations like that and install packages in the "correct"
order, I was told that order of installation of the packages can't be
controlled. My solution is to update them manually in the
known-to-be-correct order.
Perhaps the same is true when installing Ubuntu and it's working with
that huge initial "laundry list" of packages to install for you.
Maybe it matters very much which ones are installed before others in
some cases. This is probably especially true for things like video or
sound.
