Raspberry Pi Desktop is not a Pi-themed OS exactly. It's PC Debian,
but cut-down very hard to make it lightweight in the same way (and I
think by the same team) as the Pi's native OS, formerly called
Raspbian.
The thing is, the latest Pi Desktop is based on Debian 11, not Debian
12. It has not been updated since 2022. :-(
But you distinctly said you were running Debian 12.

It's a good OS. I reviewed it and it's my go-to 32-bit Linux distro.

For something even more lightweight there is Alpine Linux. I have
looked at the last 2 or 4 versions of that. 3.21 is new.

I have given pointers there for how to install it. It's tricky.
It is still in beta and unfinished but Adélie Linux is nearly as small
and rather easier:

If you want to stay with a Debian-based distro then antiX is good, but
it has many many redundant options.

Recently Damn Small Linux was revived. It is now a cut-down antiX:
