What Karl may be thinking of is Application Specific Passwords
https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185833
HOWEVER as the top of the article says, if the app supports "Sign In with
Google" you don't need application specific passwords. I think recent
releases of Thunderbird do this.*
When you use the Google Sign In, you create the authorized credentials at
Google, and you should see the authorized session listed on your account
security page at Google:
https://myaccount.google.com/security
I DO believe you have to jump through a few hoops, including multiple
factor authentication, before Google will declare your account secure, so
maybe it's not allowing new authentication until you do. Try running
through the security checkup at the top, and scroll down the page to find
the authentication given to other services.
*It's been a long time since I've had to mess with it, and I do remember
hitting some stumbling blocks making it work. It seems like I probably used
some sort of "internet search engine" to find some very specific help pages
at Google. ;-)
OH and be sure to report back here and let everyone know what you learn. :-)
