I'd start by making sure the misbehaving computer is backed up. Then,
I'd do what Colin suggested and look at the output of the dmesg
command (you may need to use sudo for that).

steps one can take in addition to that to sleuth input/output errors:

Note that his issue isn't identical to yours, but both of you can
benefit from the same sort of approach. Also, you may want to check
with everyone else in here and do your own research before following
those steps in case any of them aren't solid or useful.
