System won't boot after failed upgrade from 23.10 to 24.05

Well, I tried that, but so far I haven't even managed to get it to
boot off the flash drive. I go into the boot menu in the BIOS, select
"USB-HDD", but then it goes and boots off the internal HDD.

I tried unplugging my backup drive, which is also a USB HDD. Still not
working. And now I can't even get the BIOS to go into the Boot Menu
anymore!

I'm about ready to give up and buy a new system. I'm out of things to
try.
