Three years ago I bought a laptop with no explicit Ethernet port. However,
it has a thunderbolt usb3 port and came with a USB Ethernet adapter. I used
that to setup Wi-Fi access, and I've never had any significant issues with
it since, other than placement for optimal Wi-Fi connectivity.
I suggest if you're buying a new laptop today, there should be some kind of
USB Wi-Fi adapter with it. You can almost certainly get one separately too.
*buntu and most Linux distro come with the necessary drivers built-in these
days.
