The "stupid" idea of a "quiet" boot leads to this. *I* always remove the
"quiet" kernel option. This results in a "traditional" style of Linux/UNIX
boot: the whole log of "Starting <mumble>" messages scrolling up the screen.
If it pauses somewhere, you know exactly what it paused on. This might be
something like waiting for some other service to start or a fsck to finish or
for the local dhcp server to respond, which just means a bit of patience. Or
something might need attention, in which case, you know what it is.

I know for non-techy users, this boot up might look ominious or scary (why?). 
And I guess non-techy users don't want to see thing,
