Canon printer not working since upgrade to 24.04

Recently upgraded to 24.04.1 LTS with almost no problems. I have a Canon MP270 printer/scanner which I don't use much now, but was working in 22.04 LTS. It has only USB connection, no wireless.
The CUPS and system settings list the printer, and shows HP DesignJet T920 as the model - I think Canon printers are usually set to use HP drivers.
I'm getting:
Unsupported format "application/vnd.cups-pdf-banner"
as an error message.
I've searched for this, and tried various suggestions - I've re-installed hplip, and tried to add the michael-gruz/canon ppa, but not getting anywhere.
I know this printer is very old, it's not shown in the Canon list in settings, but as it was working OK I'm reluctant to replace it unless I really have to.
TIA for advice.
