Hey there,

I'm glad it worked.

They're often recommended to people who have NVIDIA cards, but
they're also useful elsewhere. My VirtualBox virtual machines don't
use my NVIDIA card nor its driver, yet the addition of nomodeset
nouveau.modeset=0 to that GRUB line gets me in when I get a black
screen when trying to run Ubuntu.

It seems the nouveau.modeset=0 is maybe not necessary in those
virtual machines since no NVIDIA card is present I'll have to test it
the next time I try and fail to boot into Ubuntu. Here are the notes
on this in my personal wiki:

* The nomodeset parameter disables kernel mode setting for all
graphics drivers (tells the kernel to not start video drivers until
the system is up and running).

* The nouveau.modeset=0 parameter disables kernel mode setting for
the nouveau driver (tells the kernel not to start the open-source
driver for NVIDIA cards during boot).
