Reading text in Orca

Hi,

I'm configuring Ubuntu on a laptop for someone who's visually impaired. A screen reader is very important. On my desktop, Orca reads the selected text. It doesn't do this on the laptop and I don't see a setting for this. Can anyone point me to it? Thanks.
