Chromium etc prompts me for a password every time I log in

I seem to have solved the problem by using lightdm instead of xdm. When
I did this there was a check box on the authentication prompt to unlock
automatically in future, so I checked that and it is working. lightdm
messes up the displays on login but I can live with that, it is fine
after I have logged in.
