Ubuntu 24.04 how to extract and re-create initrd

I want to take the hwe-initrd on the Ubuntu install ISO
unpack it - add a file - then re-do it.

however - just unpacking - (not adding anything) and repacking does not
result in the same size file.

What is the correct way to

unmkinitramfs hwe-initrd .
mkinitramfs -o hwe_initrd

so I get the exact same hwe-initrd - from there perhaps I can add a file
