Could it be you are one of the many people who miss the Unity 7 desktop
environment? It has been kept alive, and maintained. (The backstory is
encouraging, if you're interested in learning more about it.)

But if you have a USB stick or can set up a VM and want to give it a spin
to see if it has the keyboard shortcuts (and all the other niceties of the
Unity you remember), here's where you can download the latest isos of the
"official" Unity Spin of Ubuntu:

NOTE: I believe Ubuntu keeps ubuntu-unity-desktop in its regular
repositories, so you can probably install the desktop on your existing
system and switch between it and GNOME. HOWEVER having multiple desktops
installed occasionally causes some glitches, so proceed with caution. Be
prepared to reinstall from scratch.
