What does this while bar mean?

If Firefox is your topmost launch bar icon, then I'm pretty sure that
is the workspace indicator, and you are in your left most workspace,
workspace 1. The whole thing is a long round-ended bar with that white
rod in it and one or more grey dots.

Click on it to open your workspace selector - you should see a somewhat
downscaled representation of all the windows in your current workspace,
and a row of rectangles above it that let you select a different
workspace. Not sure how many there are by default, but definitely at
least two.

Click on any of the rectangles to choose a different workspace. Press
ESC or click the selector again to return to the currently selected
workspace. Alternatively, cycle through the workspaces with special-
alt-left and special-alt-right.
